Analysis and opinion of Alice on Wall Street

As always, before I start to analyze a book I like to make a short review of its author. Luis Allué Bellosta is a Catalan dermatologist born in 1.961. He defines himself as passionate about value investing, liberal and follower of the Austrian school of economics. Although by profession he does not seem the best person to write a finance book, the reality is very different. In fact, a niche has been made in my section of Recommended books to learn to invest in the stock market.

The book is about a 13-year-old girl named Alicia, whose parents have gone bankrupt in the current economic crisis. This girl travels to the financial heart of the world, Wall Street, where she will meet various characters who will help her understand how the world of economics, investment and finance works. Among them, you will meet legendary investors such as Benjamin Graham, Warren Buffett o Peter Lynch.

I would like to highlight the contributions to the book by Francisco García Paramés, Bestinver's star manager, who has been commissioned to write the book's foreword. The collaboration of two well-known members of the Spanish-speaking “value investing” community has also caught my attention, such as the importance of saving, the power of compound interest or allegory of Mister Market, although it treats many more. It also deals with other more abstract topics related to happiness, which I am not going to discuss.

The book is full of famous quotes from great characters in history, many of them very interesting, although in some cases it may seem that the author makes excessive use of this literary device.

I would recommend Alice on Wall Street especially to beginners, as she approaches her teachings from scratch, so no prior knowledge is required. In fact, the biggest “but” I can put down to this book is that it may be too basic for intermediate and advanced investors.

Alicia's valuation on Wall Street
